Garnett Earl Clark, 86, of Chase City, VA, passed away on March 15, 2012. He was born on February 20, 1926 to the late William B. Clark, Jr. and Rosa Dalton Clark of Clarksville, VA. As a young man, he served as President of his Freshman, Junior, and Senior class and as President of Student Council, he was Captain and Manager of his high school baseball team and Council Conductor of Future Farmers of America. He received the National American Farmer Degree in Kansas City and the Sears-Roebuck Award for outstanding project work in 1948.
He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII, he was stationed in San Francisco, California, Guam, and Okinawa, Japan. Returning home from the war, he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Wilkerson Clark. He built and operated Clark’s Pool and Swim Club for 38 years. He was also a tobacco and cattle farmer and owner/operator of McNeer-Clark Warehouse. He planted trees in the winter months for Continental Can Corp. for forty years, he was also a Federal Crop Insurance Agent for 40 years and proudly worked the Voting poll precincts for 40 years.
He was a kind, soft spoken man that loved to laugh. He battled Alzheimer’s Disease and heart problems in his last years.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy Clark, his children, Phil Clark (Linda), Steve Clark (Fiancé Kathy Keel), and Bill Clark (Gail), his grandchildren, Jeremy Clark (Cathy), Ryan Clark (Tenille), and Taylor Clark, his great-grandchild, Cameron Clark, and his devoted friends, Jimmy Wilkerson and James Boyd.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 2 p.m. at the Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home chapel with Military Honors. Internment will follow at Woodland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post 43, 231 South Main St., Chase City, VA 23924 or American Legion Post 45 - Fishing Trip Funds for Wounded Soldiers, P.O. Box 682 Clarksville, VA 23927.
