After a long, successful, and joyful life, another of “The Greatest Generation,” Mr. Marion Jackson “Boyd” Colgate, Sr., 89, of Chase City, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 24, 2015. He was born on December 10, 1925 in Saxe, Virginia to the late William Carl Colgate, Sr. and the late Onie Anne Dickerson Colgate. He is survived by two daughters, Beverley Colgate Franklin and her husband, Walter of Richmond, VA and Carolyn Colgate Cantrell of Richmond, VA and two sons, M.J. Colgate, Jr. and his wife, Kelly of Chase City, VA and Curtis Colgate and Ashley Breen of Virginia Beach, VA. Boyd is also survived by five grandchildren, Christian Craft and his wife, Chasity, Anne-Elizabeth Taydus and her husband, Nick, Cade Colgate and his wife, Ashley, Clay Colgate, and Claire Cantrell, three great-grandchildren, Carter, Cate, and Carlie, numerous nieces and nephews, the mother of his three oldest children, Mildred S. Colgate and devoted friend and 55 year employee of Colgate and Company, Ray Rickman. Mr. Colgate is predeceased by his wife, Jeanne Dixon Colgate and his brothers and sisters, Selma McKinney, Billy Colgate, Onie “Tootlie” Ellington, Nellie Baugh, Curtis Colgate, Edward Colgate, Mary Lee Hudson, Marjorie Colgate, and Ruth “Bootsie” Newcomb. He was a proud American, Navy man, self-made business man, and a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Mr. Colgate is a World War II Navy Veteran and proudly fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima, a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Chase City, owner of Colgate and Company, member of the Masonic Lodge 119, member of the Shriners Club and founding board member of the Virginia Aquarium. He is also a member of the American Legion Post 43, VFW Post 8228, former member of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, former member of Chase City Volunteer Fire Department, former Secretary of Economic Development of Virginia Beach, former CEO of the Cavalier Corporation in Virginia Beach, and Citizen of the Year of Chase City. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 27, 2015 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery with full military honors by American Legion Post 43. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boy Scout Troop 7430 of Chase City (Attn to: BSA Troop #7430, 350 N. Marshall St, Chase City, VA 23924).
