Christine Watterson Crowe, age 96, of Chase City, Virginia passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022. She was born March 21, 1926 in Chase City, Virginia and was the daughter of the late George Shual Watterson and the late Ennis James Carter Watterson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elmer Dodd Crowe, and her siblings, Willie Bell Martin, Evelyn Stagg, George Douglas Watterson, Doris Newman Whitten, Bonita Gupton, Wendell Ray Watterson, and Dr. Bruce Watterson.
Christine is survived by her children, Michael Crowe (Lung-Lung) of Alexandria, Diana C. Pierce (George) of Chase City and Julie Crowe of South Boston; grandchildren, Mary Pierce Fahringer, Ginny Pierce (Kameron), Anna Pierce, Kathryn Pierce (Adam) and Emily Crowe (Brian); great-grandchildren, Leah Fahringer and Sophie Fahringer; sister-in-law, Mary Ben Watterson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Christine was a graduate of Chase City High School (1942) and Johnston-Willis School of Nursing (1946). As a Registered Nurse, she worked in medical settings and as an industrial nurse. After graduation, she was a private duty nurse in Richmond for the terminally ill. In the late 1940s, she worked for Dr. Braxton in Chase City, and then as an industrial nurse at the John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir when it was under construction. Later, she worked in turn for Dr. Childrey and Standard Garments in Chase City, then Community Memorial Hospital for sixteen years, and Hampco Apparel in Chase City as plant nurse, and assisted in several management functions for sixteen years until retirement in 1988.
Christine was a very productive and talented knitter and crocheter, capable of the most complex creations which she completed with seeming ease. She was a font of information about family history and dates which she dutifully recorded in notebooks, scrapbooks and photo albums. Both relatives and in-laws knew they could count on her to fill in the blanks concerning family history, because her excellent memory remained intact to the end of her 96 years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 26, 2022 at First Baptist Church, 206 E 2nd Street, Chase City, VA 23924. Reverend Gene Burris will officiate.
