Gloria Bell Inge Matthews, widow of John Carlton Matthews, died at the age of 92, on May 23, 2025. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church where she enjoyed worshiping with her nieces and nephews. She spent her life in Mecklenburg County on a tobacco and cattle farm and in her younger years, worked as an AT&T Telephone Operator in Chase City. Mrs. Matthews had a great compassion for others as evidenced by the meals and “care packages” she carried to the sick. She is predeceased by her parents, Emma and Lewis Inge; her brothers Roy Inge, Richard Inge and Nelson Inge. She is also predeceased by sisters, Myrtle Fox, Hazel Champion, Roxie Brewer and Ruth Jones. While having no children, she nurtured fourteen nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. Gloria also cherished her “angel on earth” Stacey Rawlings and her dear friend Peggy Morgan. She rescued and loved many pets which were prominent in her everyday life. She leaves behind “Ginger” who is being loved and cared for by a family friend. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at Salem United Methodist Church, Chase City, Virginia with the Reverend Dr. Michael Blythe officiating. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Chase City, Virginia. Memorials may be directed to the Salem United Methodist Church c/o Dennis Davis 8859 Old Cox Road Chase City, Virginia 23924.
