JoAnn Smith

JoAnn Puryear Smith, 84, of Red Oak, Virginia passed away Thursday, May 14, 2026. She was born on April 8, 1942 and is the daughter of the late Roy Puryear and the late Mary Morris Puryear. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Lee Smith; her son, Darryl J. Smith; and her brothers and sisters, James Pete Puryear, E.D. Puryear, Maryland Matthews, Janie Perkins, and Roberta Coleman. 

JoAnn is survived by her daughter, Terri Carter; daughter-in-law, Linda Smith; two granddaughters, Amy Hite (Jonathan) and JoAnn Willis (Matthew); great-grandchildren, Riley Hite and Joshua Willis; and one great grandchild on the way, Ryan Hite. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and her devoted caregiver, Doris Barksdale. 

She was a long time member of Antioch Baptist Church in Red Oak where she served as the treasurer for many years. She retired from Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative. She enjoyed hummingbirds, flowers, gardening, cooking and making baby blankets. 

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home. A private Graveside Service will be held at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
