Mary Louise Inge Cox, age 85, of Chase City, Virginia passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024. She was born in Halifax County, Virginia on September 23, 1938. Louise grew up in Saxe, Virginia and is the daughter of the late William Thomas “Tommy” Inge and the late Virginia Carter Inge.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grayson Wray Cox; grandchildren, Dianna Caknipe, Amanda Dawn Scott, Michelle Cassada and Shaun Cassada; and two brothers, Henry Inge and Bernard Inge.

Louise is survived by her two sons, Belden Wray "Button" Cox (Shirley) and Tony Vance Cox; two daughters, Peggy Cox Caknipe (James, Jr.) and Cheryl Cox Lowrey (Charles); grandson that she raised as her own child, Grayson Bishop (Casey); grandchildren, Jason Cox (Nicole), Heather Cox, Jamie Caknipe, Jessica Caknipe, and James Troy Scott; great-grandchildren, Abby Bishop Huff (Aaron), Tyler Bishop, and Corbin Daniel Cox; and great-great-granddaughter, Natalie Gray Huff. She is also survived by her brothers, Willard Inge and Wayne Inge (Peggy); numerous nieces and nephews; and a special friend of the family, Bitsy Taylor.

Louise was employed for several different factories in the area (Jonbil, Craddock Terry, Burlington Industries) and also sold Avon. She was a homemaker and a farmer’s wife and served many roles to her family such as a hairdresser, babysitter, seamstress, and baker. She was affectionally known for her beautiful cakes and made them for weddings, birthdays, and other special events. She also made her daughter’s wedding dresses and dresses for other occasions. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, flowers, cooking, and was famous for her made from scratch biscuits. During her family’s tobacco farming days, she loved and treated all of the workers as her own family. Anytime friends or neighbors came to her home, she made sure they felt welcomed and enjoyed a good home cooked meal. Louise was a member of Mount Horeb Baptist Church and was a positive spiritual influence to all of her family. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Mount Horeb Baptist Church, 10077 Old Cox Road, Chase City, Virginia 23924. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
