Michael Harris

November 23, 1948 — December 15, 2024

Danville, Virginia

Michael Jerome Harris, 76, of Danville, Virginia passed away Sunday, December 15, 2024. He was born November 23, 1948 and was the son of the late Edward “Ed” Harris and the late Leona Privett Harris.

Michael is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Phyllis Flinn Harris; son, Robert Gordon of Raleigh, NC; sister, Teresa J. Harris of Tampa, FL; his beloved rescue cat, Samantha; and life long friends, Roger Hutson, Colon Cassady, and Thomas Lee Hoskins.

He was a United States Army Veteran and proudly served his country in Vietnam. He retired from Kroger Grocery after 37 years. He was a member of State Line Baptist Church in Danville. Michael was a founding member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and a member of the National Wood Carvers Association. He was an avid collector of anything collectible, especially waterfowl carvings, toy trains, antique bicycles, vintage signs, and antique car parts and books. He enjoyed making his own carvings with driftwood he found at the lake and he loved old Western movies and books. Michael lived most of his life in Danville but most recently, he enjoyed spending time in Clarksville and enjoying the scenery of the lake, especially at Occoneechee State Park with his wife, Phyllis. Michael was genuine, kind, and a good friend to all; he was always willing to lend a helping hand and even played Santa during Christmas time for many children.
